RYA Youth Stage 3

 
Youth Training Scheme Stage 3 – Getting Good

This is the “Big One” and at the successful completion of Stage 3 you will be a competent light wind sailor able to control your own boat all by yourself and be the envy of all your mates too!

A few of the tasks you will master on your stage 3 course are:
  • Rigging without assistance.
  • Launch and recovery without assistance in onshore wind.
  • Knots – Bowline, clove hitch, rolling hitch.
  • Sail a triangular course.
  • Coming alongside.
  • Man overboard recovery.
  • Applying the five essentials.
  • Tacking and gybing.
  • Preparing for a tow.
  • Righting a capsize as helm or crew.
Sailing theory:
  • How to recover a man overboard.
  • How a sail works.
  • Importance of personal safety.
  • Aware of the dangers of hypothermia.
Racing:
  • Introduction to racing courses.
  • Starting procedure.
