Youth Training Scheme Stage 3 – Getting Good
This is the “Big One” and at the successful completion of Stage 3 you will be a competent light wind sailor able to control your own boat all by yourself and be the envy of all your mates too!
A few of the tasks you will master on your stage 3 course are:
- Rigging without assistance.
- Launch and recovery without assistance in onshore wind.
- Knots – Bowline, clove hitch, rolling hitch.
- Sail a triangular course.
- Coming alongside.
- Man overboard recovery.
- Applying the five essentials.
- Tacking and gybing.
- Preparing for a tow.
- Righting a capsize as helm or crew.
Sailing theory:
- How to recover a man overboard.
- How a sail works.
- Importance of personal safety.
- Aware of the dangers of hypothermia.
Racing:
- Introduction to racing courses.
- Starting procedure.
