Youth Training Scheme Stage 2 – Improver
Done Stage 1, got the certificate? Now it’s time to pick up the pace and get you sailing out there on your own. Up for that? Then read on.
This stage is all about getting your confidence level high, so that you are able to control the boat by yourselves, but still with an instructor or experienced sailor onboard, or if your confidence is “through the roof”, sailing single-handed under supervision. The Captain of your own craft!
You will learn all the tips and tricks you will need to know to be able to sail the boat controllably and, of course, safely.
A few of the drills you will master in this stage will be:
- Can launch and recover a dinghy in an offshore wind.
- Knots – Round turn and two half hitches, reef knot.
- Basic principles of stopping, lying to and controlling speed.
- Tacking, gybing and getting out of irons.
- Can sail a shallow triangle course (under supervision).
- The “5 Essentials”.
- Can return to the slipway. (always handy when you start to get hungry)
- Can right a single-handed dinghy from the capsize position.
Sailing Theory:
- No Go Zone
- Basic knowledge of windward, leeward, and gybe.
- Offshore and onshore winds.
- Rules of the road.
A lot of points there, you will definitely not be bored! It is not all just instructors talking and talking – this course is all about action and getting out there and doing it for yourself.
Every minute will be exiting, and you will get a guaranteed adrenaline rush at the end of every day.
